FIRST DAY:
We leave to the northwest, towards the province of Boecia. Passing through the city of Tebas, Lebadia and the picturesque village of Arahova, we will arrive at the bottom of Mount Parnassus, where Delphi, 'the navel of the universe', is located. In the ancient world, it was one of the main religious centers, when the sanctuary of Apollo, god of harmony and music, guardian of the sacred laws of Zeus, attracted countless pilgrims who came to consult the oracle. We will cross the Sacred Way, decorated with innumerable offerings of Greek and foreign cities, until arriving at the Temple of Apolo. Besides the statues, the cities dedicated to the god the so-called treasures to house the offerings in the form of small temples, such as the treasure of Sifnos, the treasure of Thebes or the Treasure of the Athenians, which we will visit.
In addition to the whole monumental complex, including the Oracle's Tholos, the visit to the Delphi Museum is absolutely mandatory once you are in the site. It is one of the most important museums in Greece. It houses the works of art found in Delphi during the excavations carried out by the French School of Athens. In the lobby, we will find a conical block of marble covered by a sculpted net, a Hellenistic copy of the navel that marked the center of the known world. We will also visit the famous statue of the Charioteer of Delphi, perfectly preserved, dating from the Archaic era and part of a bronze votive offering that represented the victorious Quadriga of the Olympic Games.
We leave in the afternoon towards the north of the country. We will make a brief stop in the famous passage of Thermopylae, a geostrategic place in ancient times. We continue our journey until we reach the town of Kalambaka, where we will have dinner and stay in 3 or 4 star hotels.
SECOND DAY:
We are in Meteora'suspended in the air' or 'between heaven and earth'; once there, we understand the reason for the name. An authentic forest of rocks of fantastic and dark shapes are cut out over the Peneo valley and the city of Kalambaka. It is a unique geological phenomenon that creates a unique landscape. The tops of these gigantic boulders are crowned by some cenobitic monasteries. Its origin is in the first anchorites of the 11th century, who settled in their caverns in search of isolation. In the 14th century, with the invasion of the Serbs in Thessaly, many of these hermitages were transformed into monasteries and it was then that St. Athanasius, coming from Mount Athos, founded the Great Meteora, and other monks followed him, despite the difficulties to transport the materials for the construction of the different monastic centers. The 15th and 16th centuries were the period of greatest splendor, when there were up to 24 monasteries. Today, there are only 5 of them occupied by religious (male and female). We will have the opportunity to visit two of these unique monasteries in the world with our guide.
