The capital of Greece holds more than three thousand years of history, which makes it one of the oldest inhabited cities on the planet. The first original city, which was located in the center of the Attica watershed, between the mountains of Egaleo, Parnes, Pentelico and Imitos, and limited by the Saronic Gulf to the South, is today, after the urban growth of the 20th century and the assimilation of nearby towns, the largest city in Greece, and one of the largest in Europe, both in size and population. Its strategic geographical location and the mildness of its weather were the main reasons why it was inhabited. In the course of its long history, Athens generated a brilliant civilization that is an indisputable contribution to the universal heritage of knowledge, politics and art.
ARTYTOURS, tours in Spanish, is today responsible for guiding travelers through the culture, art, and architecture of this Helade, which resists Chronos and remains young and current, in a constant bustle of creativity and activities to suit every taste. While we visit the city, we will appreciate the testimonies of a glorious past, which coexists in harmony with the dynamic and thriving rhythm of the city and the daily life of its inhabitants.
We start our tour from the terminal located in front of the Arch of Hadrian. We make our first stop at the Panathinaikó Stadium, also known as Kalimármaro (beautiful marble), built entirely of marble from the remains of an old stadium that hosted the first edition of the Olympic Games of the modern era, in 1896.
We continue our visit traveling with the bus through the most important avenues of the city. In Síntagma Square (Constitution Square), we find the Parliament. On the walls of its stairway, we can admire the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded by the Evzones, the Presidential Guard, dressed in the ceremonial costume and performing the traditional Changing of the Guard, which can be attended every Sunday at 11 o'clock in the morning in its most solemn version, and every hour, everyday, in a shorter version.
We continue along Panepistimiou Avenue (University), getting a panoramic view of the Neoclassical buildings that are located along it: the Money Museum, the Catholic Cathedral, Schliemann's house (discoverer of Troy and passionate about archaeology, that proved that the Iliad actually described historical scenarios), the Academy, the Faculty and the National Library. We arrive to the famous and frenetic Omonia Square (Concord Square), the center of the city's commercial activity, built in the second half of the 19th century. It has undergone both structural and architectural changes, and its name has also changed. Today, it hosts the sculpture of Pentakiklon (five rings), that goes into motion by the weight of the rainwater. From Omonia Square, we continue along Stadiou Avenue, which has existed since the time of classical Greece, passing through the National Historical Museum.
We leave the bus when we arrive to the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis, where our guides will explain and show the temples and buildings that it contains. The Golden Age of Athens appears in the works of the time of Pericles, The Propylaea, the Ionic temple of Athena Nike (in memory of the victory over the Persians), the Erechtheion, (the original Ionian temple consecrated to the ancient divinities of Poseidon and Athena, the two gods that, according to mythology, disputed the protection of the city), and the Parthenon, symbol of the Democratic Athens.
After the visit to the Acropolis, we will visit the new Museum, which holds in its modern architectural interior the findings of the country's most important archaeological site. The building itself, as well as its structure and interior division, are a tribute and reflection of the classic architecture of the Parthenon. The pieces that are kept in it are a mixture of originals and copies, especially of the reliefs of the friezes and the pediment of the Parthenon temple, without forgetting the famous caryatid still today in the British Museum in London or the Museum of the Louvre, in Paris. With these copies, it is clear the ideology and the intention that underlies this fantastic collection: this is the museum of the reclamation, the memory of a plunder. The museum of the absence of a heritage. Visitors will witness the history and evolution of the famous hill and its buildings through the preserved pieces, always accompanied by one of our Spanish-speaking expert guides.
