We leave Athens and gradually see the arid landscape of Attica transformed into an imposing mountain image of Mount Parnassus. Leaving behind the mountainous pass of Arahova (940m) and its impressive views from the southern slope of the Mount Parnassus, we reach the archaeological site of Delphi.
Delphi was one of the main religious centers of ancient times, when the sanctuary of Apollo, god of harmony and music, guardian of the sacred laws of Zeus, attracted countless pilgrims who came to consult the oracle. The legend says that Delphi was founded by Zeus, who, eager to know the center of the world over which he reigned, sent two eagles to explore his empire. The birds were placed on the Parnassus and there they discovered the 'omphalos', which made Delphi the center of the Universe. From the beginning, the Oracle of Delphi acquired great influence in all the known world. The predictions of the Apollo priestess greatly influenced individual decision-making and sometimes had a huge impact on the history of the cities and states of the time. The god spoke through her in an incomprehensible language that the priestesses listened to and interpreted. An atmosphere of mystery still surrounds its ruins.
We will walk along the Via Sacra to the temple of Apollo, decorated with innumerable offerings of Greek and foreign cities besides the statues. The cities dedicated the so-called treasures to the god and housed the offerings in the form of small temples, like the treasure of Sifnos, the treasure of Thebes or the treasure of the Athenians, which we will visit.
The visit to the Delphi Museum is absolutely mandatory once you are in the site. It is one of the most important museums in Greece. It houses the works of art found in Delphi during the excavations carried out by the French School of Athens. In the lobby, we will find a conical block of marble covered by a sculpted net, a Hellenistic copy of the navel that marked the center of the known world. We will also visit the famous statue of the Charioteer of Delphi, perfectly preserved, dating from the Archaic era and part of a bronze votive offering that represented the victorious Quadriga of the Olympic Games.
