We travel 70 km, crossing Poseidon Avenue, along the entire coast to the suburbs of the periphery of Athens, Glyfada, Varkiza, etc, until we reach our destination, Cape Sunio, at the southern end of Attica. The fishing village that we see today was once a city with its corresponding port. At the top of the cliff, which plunges into the Aegean Sea, is the marble temple that Pericles ordered to build and that was consecrated to Poseidon (444 BC). Its Doric columns have served for centuries as a reference to ships, and when, in 1810, the British poet Lord Byron engraved his name on one of the 16 columns still standing today (of the original 34), he established an unfortunate precedent of vandalism in the temple.
We will enjoy the view of the Aegean Sea from the top of the cape, and a spectacular sunset.
Return to Athens at 6:30 pm. - 7 pm.
